Side Scrolling Platform

20 titles

The side-scrolling platform game rose to popularity on consoles with the release of Super Mario Bros. in 1985. While these titles have enjoyed some success on the PC (such as the Jazz Jackrabbit series), this style has flourished under home consoles. The side-scrolling platform game generally involves moving from left to right and jumping on platforms that are magically suspended in the air. The jumping is also typically carried over into defeating enemies, since the "butt-bounce" technique of bopping on enemy characters' heads is usually the preferred method of attack. Side-scrolling platform games almost exclusively feature a "mascot" or cartoon-like star, and they can have 2D graphics, 3D graphics, or a combination of the two.
